THREE Mosquitoes Of The Species Culiseta Annulata Have Been Discovered In Iceland For The First Time. The Rare Find Was Made Last Week By Insect Researcher Björn Hjaltason, Who Spotted The Mosquitoes In His Garden On October 16, 2025. This Marks The First Known Appearance Of This Mosquito Species In The Country.
In An Interview, Hjaltason Said He Initially Noticed Something Unusual About The Insect He Caught. “I Could Immediately Tell This Was Something I Had Never Seen Before,” He Explained. The First Specimen He Captured Was A Female Mosquito, Which Prompted Further Investigation.
The Following Day, Hjaltason Encountered Another Mosquito In The Same Area — This Time A Male, Identifiable By Its Feather-Like Antennae And Larger Mouthparts Compared To The Female. His Observations Confirmed That The Species Was Indeed Culiseta Annulata, A Mosquito Type More Commonly Found In Warmer Parts Of Europe.
On October 18, 2025, Hjaltason Captured A Second Female Mosquito, Strengthening Evidence That The Species Has Now Reached Iceland. Researchers Believe The Insects May Have Arrived Due To Changing Weather Patterns Linked To Global Warming, Which Is Increasingly Allowing New Species To Survive In Colder Regions.
